Resolve to be socially responsible

Whether you resolve to quit smoking, lose weight or get in shape, most New Year’s resolutions focus on helping yourself. This year, why not resolve to help others? Here are some examples of environmentally and socially responsible resolutions:

Declutter

Empty your closets and only return the clothes that you wear on a regular basis. If you haven’t worn something in over a year, you probably never will. If it doesn’t fit, get rid of it. Don’t try to convince yourself that you’ll take your ill-fitting clothes to a tailor. Donate your unwanted clothes to charity. Your closet will thank you. If your garage doesn’t have room for your vehicle, it’s time to declutter. Old cans of paint and other household chemical products should be taken to a hazardous waste disposal centre. Bicycles, sports equipment and gardening tools in good condition can be donated to charities that pass them onto those in need.

Go green

Save money and the environment by reducing your carbon footprint. Eat locally grown foods whenever possible. Eating more fruits and vegetables is not only good for you, it’s good for your wallet. Raw foods are often cheaper than their processed counterparts. Walk, ride your bike or use public transit whenever possible. You’ll save money on gas and get more exercise. If you must drive, invest in a fuel-efficient or hybrid vehicle. Combine your trips to make your fuel go the extra mile.

Buy less, waste less

Consume fewer resources by buying less. Before you make a purchase, ask yourself if it’s a need or a want. Avoid impulse buying by waiting a day or two. If the urge to open your wallet has passed, you probably don’t need it. Don’t put unwanted electronics in the garbage because they may contain substances that are harmful to the environment. Take them to an electronics recycling centre instead. Expired medications shouldn’t be thrown in the garbage, poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet because they will eventually end up in the water system. Take them to your local pharmacy for proper disposal.

Give back

Donate your time by volunteering at your favourite charity. Run errands for a senior. Share your talent for music, art or photography by giving lessons. Teach English to a new immigrant. Start a community garden in your neighbourhood. Get your hands dirty and enjoy the fruits of your labour with produce grown in your own backyard. Surplus food can be donated to a local soup kitchen.
